You’re unique. I’m unique. That’s great. But are you really unique when you’re treading water in a sea of unique people? Unique people who are better swimmers than you? Unique people who have a poweryacht overrun with scantily-clad dancers whose teeth and genitals glow in the sun?

I love that episode of The Simpsons where Lisa meets a girl who she describes as ”better than me at everything that makes me special.” A lot of people will try and tell you that you just have to accept there will always be someone better than you. But I think that seems too pessimistic a spin, even for me. How do you go on when you know that everything you do which defines you, a whole mess of people are doing it better? And some for lots of money, with which they buy poweryachts and dancing slaves?

You don’t have to look far to find the darlings and the hidden gems who might make you second guess yourself. Maybe you look up to them, maybe you secretly resent them, or a bit of both, but ultimately you’ve just got to keep doing your own thing. I like to think that despite the inevitability of being outshone, you can take solace in knowing that even if you feel like a drowning speck of plankton, you’re still doing something the world’s never seen, because no one else is quite the same boiling cocktail of mush and blood that you are.

So splash your brain out!! ‘Cause whether you make ripples or tidal waves, they’re yours.
